A new year has just begun, and it’s the perfect time to refresh and renew your style. 2013 is going to be an exciting year for fashion because prints have taken over! Whatever your style is, prints have already made their way into your favorite brands. The top three prints that everyone should own this year are southwestern, floral and animal. Whether you’re a preppy girl, or a casual guy, it’s really easy to add these prints to your wardrobe and look effortlessly trendy.

If there is one print that you absolutely have to have this season, it’s a southwestern themed one. The great thing about this print is that it can be subtle or daring depending on what kind of piece you wear.  For this print, go for modern versions, which are offered from stores like PacSun.

The above women’s shirt from PacSun is the perfect example of how to spice up an otherwise neutral button down with a southwestern flair. You could even do this yourself by taking your grandma’s southwestern blanket and patching strips onto an old denim shirt. It screams authentic, hip and laidback. Wear some feather earrings or a topaz necklace to solidify the theme.

The same goes for guys with casual pieces like hoodies and t-shirts in a restructured southwestern print. The hoodie shown above on the left from PacSun is understated, yet still visually interesting. It’s a great replacement for that plain gray top you may have. There’s no effort needed to make an outfit out of it either, just pair it with your favorite jeans.

“Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking,” Miranda Priestly said sarcastically from the movie The Devil Wears Prada. Yes, floral prints are nothing new to the fashion world, but how they are worn has changed for 2013. The most surprising thing is that floral prints are becoming more and more fashionable for men. If you’re not afraid of your feminine side, guys can rock florals like it’s nobody’s business.

It’s not hard to find floral prints if you’re a girl, but it is hard to find a new method to wear them. The Hollister Co. jeans pictured on the above right are a totally new take on the staple print. The ombre detailing makes the jeans even more modern and fun. The model is also adding the denim on denim trend to the floral which helps her to stand out in a crowd.

For guys that want to take their style to a new level, floral prints are the way to go. Sometimes all you need is one small pop of floral to make an outfit. The floral beige snapback hat pictured above from Urban Outfitters is an easy way to make the trend work for you. If you’re feeling fearless, go for a floral t- shirt with rolled up sleeves from Nordstrom, especially from their exclusive online Topman collection that is affordable and young.

Out of all three prints, animal has to be my favorite pick for 2013. This is a tricky print to wear without looking trashy, but if done right, the results are posh and perfect. When it comes to choosing animal print pieces, it really pays off to go for higher end brands. By doing this you’ll not only avoid looking cheap, but you’ll also be able to wear the clothes all year long.

A more refreshed take on animal prints for women is to wear an abstract or minimalist animal print. This gray cardigan pictured above from Nordstrom is a sleek interpretation of an animal print that works for edgy or preppy styles. You don’t have to stay confined to natural looking animal prints, going for brightly colored or black and white versions are great alternatives.

Is the “Party Rock Anthem” band LMFAO to blame for animal prints becoming fashionable for guys? It could be so. If you’re confident and bold enough with your style, animal prints may be the ideal 2013 trend for you. The crewneck sweater featured on the top left from H&M is a wonderful way to excite a pair of jeans and sneakers. If you’re going out on a date or to a dance, the cheetah print button down shirt on the top right from Urban Outfitters is the way to go. But you don’t always have to take animal prints so literally, you can find your spirit animal on a T-shirt too. The Abercrombie & Fitch T-shirt pictured on the bottom left is a great wearable conversation piece.

Ring in the New Year with one or all of these amazing prints! Make a resolution to challenge and update your style with these incredible options. If you’re looking good in 2013, you’ll be feeling good too!
