See This Film….Now

If you’re looking for a multidimensional film with depth, comedy, and beautiful cinematography, don’t miss “The Spectacular Now”. I entered the theater expecting another cutesy teen love story and left awestruck. This movie completely shattered my expectations.

The Spectacular Now follows the young, fun-loving, spontaneous Sutter Keely (Miles Teller)  as he navigates his senior year of high school. After drinking too much at a party one night, he meets and befriends Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley), a smart, sweet, realistic girl far outside of Sutter’s social circle. Despite their differences, they develop a sincere connection that blooms into a romance. As their relationship develops, Sutter must confront various long-ignored issues like his absent father, his lack of preparation for the future, and his own budding alcoholism.

Honest and human, with well-developed characters and not-so-typical surprises, “The Spectacular Now” can strike a chord within anybody’s heart–especially young people. It asks us to question what is truly important, what it means to “live in the moment”, and what our futures could contain if we held onto hope.

  1. Good review. Talks about a lot of themes that teenagers don’t want to hear or understand, but must, just so that they can experience life for all that it is. For better or worse, too.
