With a little bit of San Francisco and Paris influencing her “smoothie style”, this week’s fashion spotlight has been dressing to impress since before she was on the BP Fashion Board in high school. She also passed the ultimate test of Californian initiation into the NW look: The Birks (despite contradictory feelings towards them). Check out Kara Flagelollet, her (Gonzaga) hipster style, her trick to magically expanding her closet three-fold (it may involve her roommates), and her aspiration to bring high-waisted bell bottoms to campus once-and-for-all…
SO: Can you describe your usual everyday style/look? How would your friends describe your style?
KF: I would say casual and colorful…a little bit bohemian. But also with a classic twist. Basically all the words that you can use to describe style and just throw them into one. It’s like a smoothie of style! My friends do call me hipster. It’s funny ‘cause at Gonzaga I probably am a hipster when it comes to my style, but in the real world, not at all. In San Francisco, I am the Hillary Clinton of style with my conservative nature.
SO: How has growing up in San Francisco influenced your style?
KF: I think I’m very sort of average, cute, slightly hippy—but I still wear ridiculously expensive clothing. The epitome of San Francisco: I’m gonna’ look hip but still spend a ridiculous amount on clothes. The day I bought Birks was the day I gave up.
SO: Birks with socks?
KF: I haven’t gone that far yet.
SO: What is the most used article of clothing in your closet?
KF: Hands down my Clarks Desert boots. They’re gender neutral. So one day I was at the grocery store and this clerk came up to me and was like, “Nice shoes!” and I was like, “Thanks!” and I turned around and he was wearing the exact same ones! I’ve seen one other girl wear them but mostly guys. I’ve had girls approach me and ask me out on dates (thinking I’m a guy)…hey I’m flattered (laughs).
I also have like six pairs of AG boyfriend jeans, I just wear them all the time. I’ve gotten them over the course of 7 years…they just sort of grow with me. Boots come first though. If you have to pick one, it’s boots.
SO: Walk me through the outfit you are wearing now.
KF: Shoes: My (other) favorite boots, I got them at Nordstrom my sophomore year of high school when I was on BP fashion board.
Pants: Green AG skinny jeans.
Top: Really summery Joie shirt, I love it. I have my roommate’s sweater over it, and yes, I literally wear my housemates’ clothing almost every single day. And they wear mine too. There are three of us and it’s basically like we have one closet; we mysteriously all fit into each other’s clothes so it works! Shoutout to Regan Casey and Katie Uppendahl!
Third pieces: This is my scarf that my friend got me from Florence, and my hipster glasses.
SO: What did you do on BP fashion board?
KF: I was just in high school and really into clothes—I still am—and really into Nordstrom, it’s the mother ship. It was really fun and really great and then I stopped when I came to college. Honestly not that much, we did fun things like get into groups, go through BP and pick out outfits; just silly fun stuff that high schoolers do. I’m sure it got me into lots of schools! I’m sure Stanford saw it and automatically thought, “we need her”, another white girls obsessed with Nordstrom (laughs).
SO: What is your go to color?
KF: Navy blue or forest green.
SO: If you could only shop at one clothing store for the rest of your life, where would it be?
KF: Nordstrom, yeah. I also love Anthropology but Nordstrom has more diversity.
SO: What or who is your fashion inspiration/idol?
KF: I’m gonna’ be cliché here and say my mom—it’s her or Taylor swift—because she has really great style. She has a lot more of a classic style than I do—she wears a lot of Kate Spade, Eileen Fisher, Tory Burch—but she always looks really put together. I borrow a lot of her scarves and the occasional sweater.
SO: What are you most excited to be wearing in the fall weather? Any specific styles you’re excited about?
KF: Well I have this really amazing down vest that’s this pretty green color that I just love. I love hats. Beanies. Absolutely…and coats with your scarf poking out.
SO: When you roll out of bed ten minutes before class, what is your go-to outfit?
KF: A big sweater, boyfriend jeans and probably my Clarks…
SO: Do you dress to test?
KF: I don’t dress to test, but I definitely dress up on certain days, like if I feel like I’m going to run into someone…but I do try to look nice every day.
SO: If you could choose any trend to make a comeback on (or come in general) campus, what would it be?
KF: I already know my answer, which I wear anyway but I’m waiting for other people to…high-waisted bell bottoms (laughs)! Like not huge, they’ve got some flair though…you wear them with converse and a cropped sweater. And Denim. But then again, I did have this awesome pair that were forest green… I got a bleach stain on them so I had to give them away.
Trends really do recycle…
SO: Any parting fashion tips?
KF: I actually lived in Paris for a year, too. That’s probably relevant?! Actually, in Paris, it’s cool, (I realized) people have this unrealistic ideal of Parisian style, but it’s not true. News flash, not all Parisian women are super skinny! What I love about Parisian woman is that they just do their thing and that’s why they’re universally praised. Confidence. Just being comfortable in your own skin. But that’s the most valuable thing I learned about style while studying abroad…wear what you want and wear it because you want to.
