February 14. What does that day mean to you? Well, it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people – let’s take some time to explore some of them.

Person 1: “Do you have any special plans this weekend?”
Person 2: “Not really.”
You know what? That’s OK. If you don’t have plans this weekend – for whatever reason – it’s all good. Valentine’s Day is such an interesting day. There are so many expectations, so much room for disappointment and so much time for single people to talk about being single (not that that is necessarily a bad thing).
Whatever you decide to celebrate, go at it with full force. If you’re all about Single Awareness Day, embrace it. Traditional Valentine’s Day, embrace it. And, my person favorite, Anna Howard Shaw Day.
Let’s turn to my good friend, Liz Lemon, for a bit and learn a little bit about Anna Howard Shaw Day.
In her television show 30 Rock, Tina Fey portrays the amazing Liz Lemon. Lemon, who has been single for almost the entirety of her adult life, gave up on Valentine’s Day a long time ago. So, her solution? Celebrate Anna Howard Shaw, of course.
Anna Howard Shaw was a leader of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. She was also a physician. But, most importantly, she was born on February 14. So, if anyone out there needs to find something to celebrate – if you still want to celebrate something even though Valentine’s Day has turned into some obscure, societally driven and corporately run holiday – choose Anna Howard Shaw.
Or, if you are one of the lucky ones that has a significant other on February 14, do something amazing with them. Don’t get me wrong, if you have someone to do something with on Valentine’s Day, that’s awesome — and I hope you have so much fun/make memories and all that. But just remember that some of your friends may be out there embracing Single Awareness Day or, while it may be a minority, Anna Howard Shaw Day.
